DJ Greg Tomaz Tells Us How He Turned The Tables In Techno Space And Found Success
The first Kerala artist signed to a world-famous label, Greg Thomas knows how to make Silicon City dance to techno beats. The Southern electronic music scene is taking center stage and Tomasz is rocking the consoles with some of the best DJs in the world, including Nick Warren, known for his deep grooves and techno prog. As he says, "My music is always meant to tell a story" and we dive straight into the story.
How did you become a DJ and how has your music career evolved since then?
When I was a teenager, I was only interested in two things: cricket and music. Later hip hop caught my attention and eventually I started making beats. Then and still the Internet is my guide. He even had a small hip-hop group! After a while I discovered a mix of EDM underground legends like Sasha, Hernan Katano and Nick Warren. I changed right away! It's funny how quick and easy the transition to progressive music was.
You believe in the power of power. What kind of energy do you want your audience to get from your music?
My music has always been about telling a story. The flight ended with a bang. There will be an introduction, a twisted plot with various melodramatic characters, and then an ending where it takes time to recover. The soundtrack to the fictional story that each listener creates. At least that's the intention.
If you could open up or collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
Brian Said is a prolific producer/artist based in New York. I want to know exactly how he works, because basically I only deal with his music. Acting, auditioning or playing the part of a performer. I had the honor of speaking to him when he visited India a few years ago and it was a great pleasure to listen and talk with him.
When it comes to music, many people avoid it because it's dangerous. Are you facing the same problem?
There is nothing better to do. It's dangerous, but when you know it's the only thing you want to do, the choice becomes the only way. Now, having said that, I must point out here that nothing can be achieved without genuine support, and I have received it in abundance. I am very grateful for this.
Do you have any tips or advice for beginner DJs?
What I recommend to do in the DJ world is to choose a sound and style that is warm, not everyone plays like that, but to find your own sound, not as a fad, but as honest. It is your uniqueness that makes you stand out. Spend time trying to find your voice!
What do you have next?
Over the next few months I have new releases on some of the most premium and popular labels. I have been busy in my home studio to focus on creating and improving my music. I hope you achieve this because you have produced songs that I am very proud of, because I am so confident in my work that I am rarely happy.
Greg Thomaz will perform at PHASE at Indiranagar Social, Bangalore on Sunday 23rd July.
