Dom Dolla Infuses Hiphop And House Into His Tracks And Live Sets
Nelly Furtado returns to the stage and the Canadian pop singer, known for her experiments with different genres, has chosen an impressive dance album as her first single in five years. Eat Your Man was released on June 2, a club hit produced by upcoming Australian DJ and Wynn nightlife resident artist Dom Dolla.
The two musicians met while headlining Australia's Beyond the Valley festival last year, and while Furtado was interested in finding new dance sounds for his upcoming album, for the 31-year-old, the collaboration was a big dream come true. Former DJ and producer. pain
“He was willing to help him with his new music, and then he turned around and said, 'I'd like to play a record at your house.' "It was a pretty surreal moment for me," he told the Weekly . the last 20 years. But a lot of artists are showing interest in house and techno culture, which of course was a big influence on the pop genre, so it's good to see things go the other way and come full circle."
Dolla's breakthrough came in 2018 with "Take It," which surpassed 200 million streams and went platinum. His love of house and hip-hop has always shaped his sound and sentiment, and there's no denying the fusion of these genres in today's pop music.
Another of his recent works is the single "Rhyme Dust," a collaboration with MK that references 90s hip-hop and is produced by Q-Tip. "Some people say that MK was one of the founding fathers of modern house music, so I wanted to make sure the collaboration and samples were going well and it was fun to watch the album blow up," says Dolla. “In my opinion, house music is becoming more and more global music in the internet age. There used to be a cultural divide based on what the radio or DJs were playing, but now everyone has access to music from all over the world with TikTok and Instagram.”
And Dolla certainly broadened her global audience in Las Vegas, playing more than ever in 2023, including a massive EDC set and a dozen shows at the Wynn.
"Vegas is the place to hone your DJ skills and it reminds me of when I started working in Australian clubs when I was 18 and hadn't released any music yet," he says. "I wasn't a producer or a songwriter and it was all about entertaining and juggling people. I've had this conversation with other DJs who play a lot in [Vegas] and it's a great place to DJ. I like the challenge."
