We Have The Vivo X90 Pro, One Of 2023s Most Interesting Android Phones
The Vivo X90 Pro arrived to prepare for our review. If you're unfamiliar with Vivo, it's part of the same tech empire as OnePlus, Realme, and Oppo, but they're not as closely related as those three in terms of software, design, and collaboration. : We were intrigued by Vivo's partnership with Zeiss, as well as the wider global launch of the X90 Pro.
Vivo and Zeiss have been working together on smartphone cameras since 2020, with the Vivo X60 Pro and X60 Pro Plus being the first devices to emerge from the collaboration. According to Zeiss, the pair work together not just on a single software component or feature, but on the entire imaging process to ensure quality. Zeiss doesn't make cameras, it makes camera optics, so that's different from partnerships like OnePlus and Hasselblad, where it focuses on software.
All of this makes the X90 Pro interesting, and that's why we're really looking forward to doing a review of the phone in the near future. In the meantime, while we're at it, we wanted to give you a look at this impressively designed device.
Looking at the Vivo X90 Pro's amazing camera
The star of the show is the 50-megapixel Sony IMX989 camera with a 1-inch sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS). Other parts of the camera module include a 50MP portrait camera and a 12MP wide-angle camera. It's all handled by the specially designed Vivo V2 imaging chip with Zeiss T* coating on the lens.
Zeiss has also teamed up with Vivo on software with the newly improved Zeiss Natural Color 2.0 for more authentic colors in your photos, plus some great camera features. The Zeiss Miniature effect makes normal scale scenes look like miniature scenes, much like a Tilt Shift filter, while Portrait Cine-Flare cleverly adds highlights to portraits.
What else? Vivo talks about the X90 Pro's Night Mode capability, highlighting its Extreme Night Focus technology for precise focus in low light, Super Moon Mode and AI Night Vision for RAW photos.
Otherwise, the Vivo X90 Pro
Although we haven't tried the phone for a while, we already have it in our hands, so we can talk about the design. He is tall . It's 9.3mm thick and weighs 215 grams, and the camera module protrudes a few millimeters from the back of the phone. The body is curved and the 6.78-inch screen fits well without feeling too bulky. However, it is still a real hit.
The camera module is a large bezel with the Zeiss logo on the bottom, but Vivo has taken the unusual step of writing "Extreme Imagination" on a metal strip that runs along the body of the phone. It adds absolutely nothing to the design, means nothing and unfortunately spoils the look. At the top of the phone is another inscription, this time "Professional photography". It's been the mainstay of the Vivo X series of phones for a while now, but that doesn't make it any less useless.
The back is wrapped in vegan leather and only comes in one color, the legendary black. It's a shame Vivo hasn't looked back on Oppo phones like the Find X2 Pro with its bright orange leather back panel, instead opting for a rather dull and boring black finish. Inside is a 4,870mAh battery with 120W wired and wireless charging.
Vivo turned to MediaTek to power the X90 Pro and opted for a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Announced at the end of 2022, this powerful chip competes with the best products from Qualcomm and is one of the first to use it.
What about the X90 and X90 Pro Plus?
We're focusing on the Vivo X90 Pro, but it's just one of the latest X-series devices from the company. The Vivo X90 joins the standard Vivo X90. It has the same 6.78-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 1260 x 2800 resolution and is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor, but there are various changes that make it less appealing.
On the back is a 50-megapixel Sony IMX866 main camera with OIS, a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel portrait camera. Zeiss co-developed the imaging system and provided its own T* coating for the optics, as well as its own Vivo V2 chip. The 32-megapixel selfie camera is the same as the Pro model, but the battery is slightly smaller and there's no wireless charging. Vivo is also launching the X90 Pro Plus model, but it will not be released globally.
Vivo X90 Pro coming soon!
As of this writing, Vivo has not released the price of the X90 series. However, the company has provided information on where the phones will be sold, and the good news is that the X90 Pro will launch in Europe. Unfortunately, it has not yet been confirmed which European countries these are. Otherwise, it and the X90 will be available in Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Thailand, and Malaysia.
The Vivo X90 Pro is on our desk and ready to be tested in the near future. We can't wait to see what Vivo and Zeiss have to offer.
