December 9 (UPI) -- Chinese tech giant Huawei and rival Oppo announced on Friday a global cross-patent licensing agreement covering patents on mobile devices, including 5G.

"After more than 20 years of continuous innovation, Huawei has developed a large portfolio of globally important patents in areas such as 5G, Wi-Fi and audio/video codecs," said Alan Fang, Head of Huawei's Intellectual Property Division. . “Mutual recognition of the value of intellectual property between companies is an important step in advancing the cycle of innovation and good research along the lines of high quality: invest, make a profit, then invest again.”

Huawei, which is subject to US government sanctions over national security concerns, owns more than 100,000 global patents and is the leading patent holder for 5G, the next generation of fast internet and mobile services.

Industry analysts say the company's sales have been hampered by US sanctions. The US has expressed concern that Huawei poses a threat to national security.

In June 2020, the US Federal Communications Commission classified Huawei as a national security threat. Huawei denies this is a threat.

In May, Canada banned the use of Huawei products on the country's 5G mobile network, citing concerns about the Chinese company's security.

In 2019, the US Department of Justice indicted Huawei on 13 counts, accusing its subsidiary and chief financial officer of violating US sanctions against Iran.

Adler Feng, Oppo's Chief Intellectual Property Officer, said that Huawei and Oppo will benefit from the new patent cross-licensing agreement.

“This clearly shows that both companies understand and appreciate the value of each other's intellectual property very well. It's a win-win deal," Feng said in a statement. "We will, as always, strive for a sustainable and healthy intellectual property ecosystem where intellectual property licenses can be finalized through peaceful negotiations and where the value of individual company patents is highly valued."
