Tecno Unveils Its Rollable Phone Concept At IFA 2023
IFA is currently underway and tech companies are showing off their exciting new devices. Among these devices, companies are showcasing potential device concepts and Tecno is one of them. Tecno has just introduced the idea of a foldable phone.
Samsung has already conquered the foldable phone market, but there is another form factor that has never been realized. It is a flip phone form factor. We've seen a lot of concepts over the past few years, one of the coolest coming from LG. But as you can imagine, the company hasn't made much progress in this regard in the past few years.
Along with other companies working on their phones, Chinese OEM Tecno is also playing its part. If you're not familiar with this company, it's a smartphone company that's been gaining momentum lately. Its parent company, Transsion, will become the world's fifth largest smartphone supplier in the second quarter of 2023. Tecno has released a new video showing off the concept of a foldable phone. Called the Phantom Ultra, the phone will expand its size by folding outwards like other concepts we've seen. When unfolded, it will measure 6.55 inches. However, when equipped with a single engine, its size increases to 7.11 inches. It is slightly smaller than some flip-flop displays.
The resolution of full screen mode is 2296 x 1595 pixels. Interestingly, when the screen is folded, a part of the screen falls off the edge of the phone. It can always be used as open screen. It will serve its purpose if not used in this way.
To unlock the device, you need to press the button on the top of the phone. 6.55 inches is still a bit big so it can be a bit tiring to use.
This may be the preferred form factor for people who want a slimmer device. Foldable phones are still trying to be as thin as regular phones. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate is about 9.1mm thick, which is smaller than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (14.6mm).
As of now, this is just a demo phone so it is not known if Tecno will release it to the general public. We just have to keep our fingers crossed. Foldable phones are more difficult to assemble than folding phones and the Tecno is certainly smaller in size. So time will tell.
