‘Woman, Life, Freedom: Hear A New Electronic Compilation From 12 Iranian Female Producers
Since the uprising in Iran began last fall against the country's oppressive regime, we've been fortunate to have the music of Iranian artists noticed and heard by audiences worldwide.
The two artists, producers AIDA and Nessa Azadih, curated Woman, Life, Freedom , a 12-song compilation of original electronic music by Iranian female artists, released on Friday, January 20, by Apranik Records, which was founded in 2022 in protest.
"Women, Life, Freedom" is the slogan of the movement, which emerged after the September 16 killing of 22-year-old Iranian Mahsa Amini by state moral police. It has found its way into all art forms, perhaps with music at the forefront.
The Islamic Republic of Iran punishes its people through imprisonment, sentencing and execution, including notable figures such as rapper Tomaz Salehi , encouraging artists to create. Oscillating between electro and breakdance, techno, ambient and experimental with Iranian producers TK SarrSew , MENTRIX and Sharona Lico, and AIDA and Azadikhah, Woman, Life, Freedom . The songs are bold and irreverent, their themes and inspirations completely tied to the current situation in Iran.
AIDA and Azadikhah represent the extremes of the Iranian population. AIDA is an Iranian producer who lives abroad and has an international outlook and strong roots in her ancestral country which is reflected in her music. A DJ/producer equally adept at playing traditional Iranian instruments, Azadiha lives in the capital Tehran, working under a regime that believes women should be silenced, especially in music.
"The themes of the collection are strength, challenge and ferocity and these can be heard throughout the track," AIDA and Azadikhah said in a statement. “This is the strength that Iranian women continue to use to fight for freedom. We dream of a future where women and girls can openly and safely practice, grow and shine in the arts, especially electronic music.
Proceeds from the non-profit collection will be donated to help struggling women in Iran. The first Iran-based organization specifically helps women and children recover from domestic violence, drug abuse, homelessness and social hardship.
