Realme GT 5 Pro Uses A Surprising Body Part To Unlock The Phone. No, Not That One

There are usually two options when it comes to unlocking your phone. Some phones have a face unlock feature where you hold your face next to the selfie camera to unlock the device. and others have fingerprint unlocking, where you achieve the same result by pressing your finger on the sensor. Sensor placement varies from company to company, but the basic idea remains the same unless you're Realme.

With the Realme GT5 Pro, Realme has created an alternative to facial and fingerprint recognition systems: palm recognition. And that raises a big question for us: Why?

Palm recognition is what you think. Instead of recognizing your fingerprint or face, the GT5 Pro can recognize your fingerprint. This is done via the front-facing selfie camera, just like face unlock, but with your hands instead of your head.

There is a video demo from X that shows this in action and works as described. So why use it?

The most obvious advantage of fingerprint recognition is also less important here: it's more hygienic since you don't physically touch the phone. However, since you have to unlock the phone to use it, which requires a physical touch, that's not a problem.

The second advantage is the same as facial recognition: you can unlock the phone when your hands are busy, when you're cooking or doing something mechanical that gets your fingers covered in something you don't want to transmit. Your phone number

And the third advantage is that the camera used for palm recognition can also be used for gesture recognition, like Realme does: the GT5 Pro can switch between applications and take screenshots without using your hands.

But the main purpose of palm recognition is, of course, security. Palm scans may be more secure than fingerprint scans, but they are a different type of scan than what we are seeing here. Palm vein detection exists and works very well, but it is very expensive compared to other methods. The version used here appears to be hand geometry recognition, which is much cheaper, faster and unfortunately less secure than fingerprint recognition.

The Realme GT5 Pro is only available in China but is expected to launch in Europe early next year. If you see it, give it a thumbs up.
