OPPO Is Now The Largest Phone Brand In China
OPPO has strengthened its position as the leading phone manufacturer in China.
The brand now has 18 percent market share and net sales of 11.4 million in Q2 2023.
That's down 4% from last year, but still more than Vivo and Xiaomi.
OPPO faces many obstacles in global markets. In recent months, the brand has left Germany and Poland and has just announced the end of sales through its main distributor in France. Fortunately, there are no such problems in its home market, as OPPO has just become China's largest phone brand, with sales of 11.4 million in the second quarter of 2023.
Although this is a net decrease of 4% year-over-year, OPPO was able to increase its overall market share as its competitors posted significant declines. In the same period, Vivo reported a 14% drop in sales, while Xiaomi reported a 19% drop in sales compared to the second quarter of 2022.
So, OPPO now has 18% of the Chinese market, which is mostly owned by Vivo. As a result, BBK's share increased to 36%, giving it a dominant position in one of the world's largest mobile communications markets.
The data comes via Canalys, and the company says the Chinese market overall fell 5% to 64.3 million units. What's particularly interesting about OPPO's numbers is that the brand has managed to make significant progress in a difficult segment that accounts for 31% of the market in its home region.
This comes on the back of strong launches for the Find N2 and Find N2 Flip, with both foldables receiving positive reviews. The Find N2 Flip was a notable success, and the launch of foldable devices outside of China allowed OPPO to capture 13% of the global foldable device market. These numbers also include the performance of OnePlus, and with the upcoming launch of OnePlus Open, OPPO should see significant growth in the coming quarters.
