Motez Teams Up With Elsy Wameyo For New Single ‘Make Way

Anyone listening to Triple J's Good Nights with Latifa Tee last night (August 9) may have heard the premiere of new single "Make Way" from Iraqi-Australian techno artist Motez. Featuring vocals from Nairobi-born, Adelaide/Kaurna-based artist Elsie Wameyo, the track has now been officially released. Watch the surreal sci-fi clip directed by Dave Cort below.

"Make Way" is Motez's second single this year and the first taste of his upcoming EP Coalesce . The collaboration with Cort, a multidisciplinary visual artist, is not unique. "[Hoff] turned out to be a mutual friend of mine and Elsie," Motese said. "We wanted the visual to reflect the essence of the song: a mix of cold and warm, soul and concrete."

Motez and Court knew the video had to show a brutal building in a rural area. From there, Court let his imagination run wild. "The cover art and music video for the song take place in a surreal, abandoned city where buildings are crumbling and leaning," said Motez.

In this ruined city you can see Moteza and Wameyo. "Dave scanned me and Elsie as we performed the song using a 3D dot cloud screen and projected our performance onto the cityscape as the camera panned around the collapsing city and its buildings," Motez said. "Dave implemented a lot of AI and 3D modeling and did some VR sketches."

Coalesce's entire upcoming EP will take place in this fantasy world, which Motez and Court have dubbed the Hypercube. This conceptual framework helped guide Wameyo's lyrical ideas.

"I knew I had two perspectives to write about," she said. "The first one has come out and is under control and the second one is eaten and powerless. But now I've realized one thing in life: even though we're all stuck, apparently we think we're not."

A release date for Coalesce has yet to be confirmed.
