Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Huawei Mate X3: Design

Both phones are metal and glass (although the Mate X3 is also available in eco-leather), and both are flip books. The fact is that the Huawei Mate X3 folds flat and at the same time has a smaller fold. It even has the same water and dust resistance as the Galaxy Z Fold 4, so it's not lacking in either. As if this were not enough, the screen is larger, but the phone is noticeably thinner and lighter.

The Huawei Mate X3 weighs 239 or 241 grams, depending on which model (leather or eco-glass) you buy, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4's 263 grams, and the Fold 4 is 6.3 mm thick when open and 14.2 - 15.8 mm thick. . folded up. On the other hand, the Huawei Mate X3 is only 5.3mm thick when folded and 11.8mm when opened. While both phones have narrow bezels, the Huawei Mate X3's outer screen is wider than the Fold 4's, which makes typing easier.

On the back of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, there are three cameras arranged vertically in a camera notch. The Huawei Mate X3 has an Oreo camera on the back, which is located in the middle of the top of the phone. Both phones have thin frames and hinges that allow them to be placed at different angles. Both phones are IPX8 certified for water resistance. The Huawei Mate X3 looks more like a regular phone when folded, mainly due to its slimmer form factor, weight, and larger screen. It feels like a more modern product in several ways, but its slimmer profile, flat fold, and less noticeable wrinkles are noticeable.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Huawei Mate X3: Review

Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X foldable display with a resolution of 1812 x 2176 pixels. This panel supports 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ content. At its highest brightness, it reaches 1,200 nits. The Cover screen measures 6.2 inches and has a resolution of 2316 x 904. It's also a 2X Dynamic AMOLED panel, but it's not foldable. It also offers a refresh rate of 120Hz and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus+.

On the other hand, the Huawei Mate X3 has a 7.85-inch foldable OLED display with a resolution of 2224 x 2496 pixels. This panel offers a 120Hz refresh rate and can display up to 1 billion colors. The cover screen is 6.4 inches and is an OLED panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The screen has a resolution of 2504 x 1080 and is protected by the Huawei Kunlun glass installed in the Mate 50 Pro.

Both phones have an excellent screen. They're reasonably bright and sharp, and they all offer high refresh rates. Viewing angles are excellent and blacks are deep. The creases on the Huawei Mate X3's main screen are less noticeable and you can barely feel them under your fingers, which isn't the case with the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Overall, this screen is decent and offers good touch response.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs. Huawei Mate X3: Performance

Both phones are powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. The truth is that Huawei is limited to 4G connectivity inside the Mate X3 due to US restrictions. Galaxy Z Fold 4 supports 5G connectivity. The phone also has 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash storage. The Mate X3 offers 12GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 or 4.0 flash storage. We also don't know if the RAM is LPDDR5 or 5X, and Huawei hasn't disclosed this information.

So, both phones are great. No matter what you're doing on the phone, it's very smooth. You could argue that the Mate X3 is still smoother and less stuttered in everyday tasks, but they both work just fine. Actually, it's the same in games. Note that the Mate X3 ships without Google services and therefore without the Play Store. However, Huawei Services and the App Store are pre-installed.

Both phones run even the most demanding Android games without any issues. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is a great processor, although it's not Qualcomm's best offering right now. Still, it's the company's second-best chip, and there's not much to complain about here.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Huawei Mate X3: Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 4,400mAh battery, while the Mate X3 has a 4,800mAh battery. This is not surprising, given that the screen is slightly larger. How long is the battery life? Well, the Fold 4's battery life wasn't the best to begin with, it was a little disappointing. It's actually improved quite a bit since launch. However, the Mate X3 still offers more in this regard.

It's hard to give exact battery life numbers for any device because it all depends on your usage. For foldable devices, this is hard to predict since two screens are included in the equation. With mixed use and heavy use, you should have enough battery on both devices for the rest of the day. Please note that games are not included and may charge you for the rest of the day. The Mate X3 gets about 7 hours of continuous screen time in mixed use, while the Fold 4 offers a little less than that. Like I said, your mileage may vary slightly, it all depends on your usage.

Now, in terms of charge, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 loses to the Mate X3. Huawei Mate X3 supports 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging, while the Galaxy Z Fold 4 supports 7.5W wired charging, 25W wireless charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W wireless charging supports wireless charging. The Mate X3 also comes with a 66W charger in the box, while the Galaxy Z Fold 4 doesn't include all chargers.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Huawei Mate X3: Camera

Galaxy Z Fold 4 includes a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera (123° field of view), and a 10MP telephoto camera (3x optical zoom). On the other hand, the Huawei Mate X3 has a 50MP main module, a 13MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto lens (5x optical zoom).

So how is the performance? During the day, the Huawei Mate X3 takes more natural photos, but the Galaxy Z Fold 4's dynamic range is often slightly better. The Mate X3's sharpness is aggressive, but it never goes beyond what is necessary. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 may have come a long way with its camera treatment. The wide section works very well with the color profile of the main camera. The Mate X3 has the upper hand here, and the same is true for telephoto.

Both phones performed well in low light, but not the best. The Mate X3 could also use a little better dynamic range in this shot. However, it handles noise a bit better than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. As expected, the ultra-wide-angle cameras on both phones are below the main camera in low light. However, the Mate X3's telephoto lens performs better in low light.

audios

Both devices have a set of stereo speakers. Although the Mate X3's speaker is very thin, the sound is very good. It's louder than the Galaxy Z Fold 4's speakers, and they both have good sound quality. You won't notice any noticeable distortion even at the highest sound setting.

Both phones lack an audio jack. For wired audio connections, you have to use their Type-C port. If you prefer wireless connectivity, remember that Bluetooth 5.2 is supported by both devices.
