Vivo's Got Samsung In Its Sights As It Launches New X Fold 2 And X Flip Foldables
Vivo has had a tough time in Germany in recent weeks, but the Chinese phone maker isn't about to let the international patent drama slow down. This week, BBK Electronics launched two new foldable devices, the X Fold 2 and the X Flip.
The X Fold 2 won't be a significant upgrade over its predecessor, but it will definitely be a necessary upgrade. The phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC with a slightly more powerful Adreno 740 GPU. The storage and RAM capacity will be the same as the previous model, although the former will be slightly faster than the former thanks to UFS 4.0.
Vivo X Fold 2 will be available in red, blue and black colors.
The internal display measures just over 8 inches and has a higher maximum brightness, although all other key display specifications are the same as the first version, including a 120Hz refresh rate.
Vivo has shrunk the new device by about 1.5mm and reduced its weight by about 30 grams, making it more comfortable to use than the original X Fold. Even in a smaller body, the company managed to pack a slightly larger 4,800mAh battery with 120W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging.
The phone's camera features a 50-megapixel primary sensor accompanied by Zeiss' special cinematic video mode, allowing users to capture hard-to-reach images easily at night without the need for a tripod to steady the device.
Vivo's second device, the X Flip, looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Of course, this device will be much smaller than the X Fold 2 and at the same time slightly less powerful.
Vivo X Flip Silk Gold, Rhombic Purple and Diamond Black
The foldable model will have the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC with the same GPU as the original X Fold. While the storage and RAM are the same as the X Fold 2, it only uses UFS 3.1.
The X Flip has a 6.74-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, but the resolution is 1080 x 2520, which isn't as high as its foldable siblings. Although it doesn't have the sharpest display, the 4400mAh battery lasts all day.
The camera is very similar to the X Fold 2, although the telephoto lens has been replaced with an ultra-wide lens. Meanwhile, Vivo claims the X Flip can be folded 500,000 times, but actual results will obviously differ from lab reports.
Both phones are available for pre-order in China and are expected to go on sale on April 28. It remains to be seen when they will hit the market internationally. An official US presence is unlikely, but we should see an EU launch soon.
With the launch of its new foldable device, Vivo was one of the first companies to showcase its range this year. If leaks are to be believed, the Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 rumors could make things difficult for people looking to get their hands on a foldable phone.
