Huawei's Mate X3 Folding Phone Is Going Global
Earlier this year, Huawei launched its first pair of 2023 phones in its home country of China, and now it's bringing them to international markets. The Huawei P60 series launches in the UK from today, starting at £1,200, while the Mate X3 goes on sale on May 26 for £2,000 from Huawei's online store. No US release is planned.
Both phones have impressive engineering features typical of Huawei smartphones, but there will be no Google apps and services due to US sanctions. That means each phone will be powered by the 4G version of last year's Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processors.
The Mate X3 is complicated
The Mate X3 is Huawei's foldable phone of the year. Similar to Google's Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, it features a foldable book design that transforms from a 6.4-inch phone to a 7.85-inch tablet when opened. Despite having two screens, the Mate X3 weighs 239g (8.4oz) and is 5.3mm thick, which is lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max and thinner when folded. It also means the Mate X3 is the lightest foldable phone on the market, a title Huawei previously won with the Mate XS 2. In terms of performance, Mate X3 is powered by Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 4G processor with a 4,800mAh battery and multiple charging options such as 66W wireless charging, 50W wireless charging and 7.5W reverse wireless charging .
The international version of the Mate X3 is similar to the one released in China, with some major changes including the operating system (EMUI VS HarmonyOS) and the lack of satellite capability, which is currently only available in China. You can read more about the Mate X3 here.
Huawei P60 Pro
The standout feature of the P60 Pro is the camera, as you can tell from the design. However, this time Huawei focused on the phone's low-light performance, even calling the camera module the "Eye of Light." The main camera is 48 MP with a variable aperture that allows you to virtually adjust the focal length. It's paired with a 48MP telephoto lens that Huawei claims is capable of 10x macro photography and an impressive 200x digital zoom. There is also a 13MP wide-angle camera and a selfie camera.
In addition to the camera, the phone has a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, a 4,185 mAh battery with multiple charging options (88W wired, 50W wireless) and an IP68 rating, and Huawei's new Kunlun glass. Much stronger than standard tempered glass. The phone comes with 8GB and 12GB of RAM, and 256GB and 512GB of storage.
