Mitchell Tech To Host Open House For Studentbuilt House On Doris Drive
MARCH 28 - Mitchell - Mitchell Technical College Student House #109 is up for viewing and auction.
Mitchell Tech invites visitors to take a tour of the 1,751-square-foot home at 405 Doris Drive at Wild Oak on Wednesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 30 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. During the event, visitors will be offered a tour of the house and information on whether or not to purchase the property.
The house was sold on a closed reserve offer for $530,000.
“This is really part of the work that students have done in our three building programs over the last two years,” said Eric Schramm, professor of architectural and structural design at Mitchell Tech, adding that inflation has increased material costs. up. “As we prepare students to pass on advanced woodworking skills, we teach them techniques to achieve high quality finishes. Despite a significant increase in the cost of materials, the $530,000 price is still a great value, as much of the labor is provided by accepted students and it does not add to the cost.
This is the eighth home built by Mitchell Tech in the Wild Oak area. Last year's house, which had a similar floor plan to this year's, sold for $489,000.
“We built with amenities that matched neighboring properties, following all the recommendations of the Homeowners Association,” says Schramm. He also said that the program strategically uses a variety of technologies and installs high-quality furniture, finishes and other finishes.
This year the house was designed and built by the Mitchell Tech team, including its students. Built by architectural design and construction freshmen in an air-conditioned Mitchell Tech store during the 2021-22 academic year. It moved to a 15,898-square-foot lot last spring, and this year the students are back to add a second bedroom and a three-box garage with a smaller fourth door for eco-friendly golf carts.
Visitors to the house enter through the front porch of the house, which is covered in concrete. The open-plan ground floor features modern touches, including student-custom rustic alder cabinetry and a built-in hood with LED lighting. Wooden beams frame the ceiling of the large room, giving a rustic feel to the contemporary home.
The home consists of two bedrooms on the first floor, including a 206 square foot master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and walk-in closet. Second bedroom and bathroom plus kitchen, pantry, dining room, laundry room and half bathroom. The lower level is flanked by two more bedrooms and an entertainment room. The bedroom had already been hung drywall.
In previous years, Mitchell Tech students built two houses a year, one at the store and one on site. In 2019, the program is nearing completion of an on-campus home to be relocated and completed on site during the student's second year.
“This model allows us to challenge students to develop existing facilities that are often looked down upon in the industry and that our advisory board has identified as essential skills,” Schramm said.
This program change also enables students to better prepare for commercial construction through Puetz Design + Build's investment in a commercial lab where students can learn about steel construction techniques and make extensive use of heavy equipment.
Students in Electrical Engineering and Maintenance connect the home to electrical grids and telecommunications, while students in Heating and Cooling Technology perform duct work and connect HVAC and ventilation systems throughout the home.
“Such cooperation is essential for successful projects in the industry. By developing them, we teach students how to apply what they have learned in real-life conditions,” Schramm said. “They can develop important communication skills and have the opportunity to learn from simulated work experiences when they have to work to other contractors’ schedules and space requirements.”
The Sealed Home offer will open at 10:00 am Wednesday, April 19 at the Mitchell Tech business office.
