Richie Hawtin To Travel Across North America Again To Educate Audiences About Underground Techno: Here Are The Dates
Ten years ago, at the height of the EDM boom in the US, Richie Houghton read The Room and realized that not only were a large number of new fans and electronic artists flooding the scene, but many of them had very limited exposure. Many of the scene's pioneers at this time hoped (and often criticized) that American audiences would transcend the confines of the Great Hall and discover the deeper sounds of house and techno, two genres certainly made in America, especially among black people. A decade later, that vision has largely been realized, with house, techno and tech house adopting electronic dance music as the genre of choice for a new generation of dance fans and EDM fans who grew up with their sound from the last 10. To celebrate the techno breakthrough and re-educate audiences in the more discerning realm of commercial sound today, Hawtin embarked on another educational tour in March. The series will take place in eight cities across the United States and Canada, promoting the virtues and values of techno and featuring a group of underground producers who create some of the genre's most complex, exotic and underground lines. Each exhibition will be held at the warehouse in association with an independent promoter.
"It's been ten years since the CNTRL tour, and now we seem to be immersed in a new techno sound that blends perfectly with the elements we were looking at at the time," Hawtin told Billboard. “The huge rise and popularity of EDM 10 years ago led us to launch the CNTRL Tour, where we travel across North America by bus to reach techno ideals and conceive them through performance and talk.
"Here we are, 10 years later," he continued, "playing underground shows across the country with live artists from the era—artists inspired by all genres and styles of electronic music, but deeply focused and committed to sound and technology ideals. - desire." .
The "This Is From Our Minds - To Be Announced 2023" tour kicks off March 10 in the birthplace of techno in Detroit before returning to the US with shows in Las Vegas, San Francisco and UL. The site has not yet been announced. See the full program below.
Joining Hawtin on the tour — which takes its name from the Hawtin 90s Plus 8 label and its catchphrase "From Our Minds to Yours" — will be a rotation of techno producers including Canadian Barbosa, New York native Jay York, Texans Decoder, Declan. Based on James, Lindsay Herbert. Phoenix (who first became a techno vocalist as an EDM fan on the CNTRL tour), San Francisco-based DJ Deep BD and San Francisco-born Gia Guam and Los Angeles. Each show must include a cast from Hutin's own.
The tour was created with Genova Canada Agency, founded by Barbosa, Decoder and fellow artist Gareth Finn (aka Riot), who said in a joint statement that "this tour is not only a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us.
