UK Techno Legend Mark Broom Hosting Groove Sessions Night At Plymouth Sports Bar

Mark Broome, who has 45,000 followers on Instagram, hosts the event at Brick's Lounge and Sports Bar.

A small bar on Plymouth's west side will be in the spotlight this weekend when British techno legend Mark Broome visits Plymouth as part of his international 100% Juice tour. Brix Lounge and Sports Bar, accessed via the Colin Campbell car park, hosts groove sessions.

Co-hosted by Portuguese hard groove king F.Tek and local hard groove producer Ana Sonic, the new event aims to put Plymouth on the map as the UK's hard groove capital.

The idea of a groove session isn't just about the music. Organizers are equally keen to support local businesses in Plymouth's west end, and great food at the Portuguese restaurant Taskinha is a tradition.

The Brix Lounge is unfortunately one of the last buildings standing on West Approach and will eventually be demolished as part of the Mille regeneration scheme. However, on Saturday night, this venue in an often forgotten part of town will be the center of an unforgettable night of the best hard techno.

This style of techno was extremely popular in the early/mid 2000s, with many famous DJs playing funk, Latino and samba techno at club nights and festivals across Europe.

Twenty years ago, the popularity of hard groove declined in favor of slower and darker techno. However, the hard groove remains hugely popular across the continent in countries such as Portugal, Spain and Slovenia, and now seems to be enjoying a renaissance.

According to Mark Broom, the term techno has diluted a lot from what it originally was and people's perception of it has definitely changed. she said. “It's very versatile and safe in some circles, but if you look further, you'll find a lot of inspiration from a lot of interesting manufacturers. Compared to twenty years ago, there are a lot more DJs and producers and techno music has gone through different cycles and seems to be back in the early 2000s."

Mark's back catalog shows his versatility as a musical pioneer, from the house style he created with Riva Starr (B Starr) to extensive IDM projects with James Raskin (The Fear Ratio). Lately, he's been focusing on the funky, percussive side of techno that regularly appears in his sets, as well as his hugely popular Octatrack Instagram videos.

For Portuguese purists F.Tek, watch technology will always be at the forefront. "Hardgroove is the most enjoyable style of electronic music," he says. Modern technology depresses me, and we need more than that these days.

One of the scene's producers, F.Tek has released tracks on some of the scene's most prestigious labels, including Invicta Records, which he co-owns with Primus V and Ryders. He also performs internationally and last week performed at an event in Portugal where Marc also headlined.

A quick search of any classic techno song on YouTube reveals thousands of comments from people saying they miss the old style of techno, prompting super-motivator Anna Sonic to promote the Groove Session event. His Invicta Records debut EP, Latin Pride, entered the Beatport Dance Top 100 at number 53, beating out several big names.

According to him, this is proof that this style of techno is still in demand.
