Optifine/Fastcraft
Make Minecraft look stunning with the basic Optifine, which adds support for HD textures and more control over graphics settings. Optifine can be installed prior to using Minecraft shaders, but it also offers dynamic lighting, enhanced textures, and increased performance on its own. Optifine should be fine on most PC setups, but if you're playing on a potato, get Fastcraft instead. It improves performance significantly, especially on low-end computers with many Minecraft mods installed.

travel ticket
Everyone wants to know where to go. The Journey Map displays your world as you explore it, lets you mark points of interest, and can even alert you when crowds are behind you. View the resulting map as a minimap in-game, in full-screen mode, or even in an external web browser.

Just enough stuff
If you need an antidote to the pain of alt-tabbing on a wiki while playing Minecraft, check out Just Enough Items (or JEI). It allows you to search for any item recipe from any installed Minecraft mod from the Minecraft inventory screen via a beautiful interface.

jade
Jade is a very useful Minecraft mod, especially if you have a bunch of textures or world-changing mods installed alongside it. Jade not only tells you which item you are looking at, but also additional information such as the contents of chests or status effects that apply to mobs.

Magical Pictures
For those who need an image to remember what Minecraft spells do, the Spell Descriptions mod provides a description of each spell book in your inventory. This mod also supports modified spellings and this tooltip is displayed in more than 13 different languages.

forest at dusk
This amazing mod adds a new portal and a brand new dimension, the Twilight Forest. You'll have to play normally until you collect the materials to create the portal above, but then you can fully enhance your Minecraft experience with new dungeons, mythical creatures, and more.

O'Plenty biomes
If there aren't enough basic Minecraft biomes to keep you busy, Biomes O'Plenty adds tons of new biomes to both Earth and the Netherlands, from the Alps to the Steppes and everything in between. It also adds a bit more variety in tools, armor, food, and paint, and adds a few extra building materials.

Alex's gang
We know from the annual Minecraft survey that players are always asking for more animals, monsters, and humanoids to be added to vanilla Minecraft. You don't have to wait for the next big Minecraft update with 84 new animals from Alex's Horde. This mix of real and fictional creatures includes kangaroos, tigers, and creatures called foot snakes, each with unique mechanics and drops.

Immersive Portals
Entering the Minecraft nether or completing a portal without knowing what's on the other side can be very scary. Luckily, Immersive Portals changes that by showing you what to expect on the other side.

RL Craft:
Still the most popular Minecraft mod of all time, RLCraft plays on the world's love of fantasy by adding dragons, fairies and more to your Minecraft world. But that's not all. In addition to terrifying and magical new mobs, RLCraft introduces new self-generated structures such as new biomes, towers and dungeons, and a whole new survival experience.

Pixelmon:
If there's anything better than one of the most popular game franchises of all time, it's two of the most popular games of all time together. Pixelmon does just that, bringing all your favorite Pokémon into the world of Minecraft.

sky factory 4
One of the most classic Minecraft mods, SkyFactory is based on the famous SkyBlock map. Combining the original SkyBlock experience with Industrial Autonomy, SkyFactory 4 lets you get lost in a floating Minecraft world full of unique gadgets and vehicles, new items and even magic.

MC is better
The creators' vision of what Minecraft should be , Better MC features tons of bosses, mobs, items, items, dimensions, quests and more to give you the complete Minecraft experience you never knew you needed Add We're not saying we still don't love the base game, but Minecraft will never be the same after trying Better MC.

Vault Hunter
Finally, our last pick from the list is Vault Hunters, another mod that completely changes the game. Developed by popular Minecraft YouTuber and Hermit Iskall85, Vault Hunters takes you into immersive, procedurally generated vaults where you must smash your way to valuable loot, armor, and weapons. There is also a fully playable story for Vault Hunters, with the ultimate goal of combining 25 artifacts to unlock a final, deadly vault.

Small plates
We're going to dive deep to start the creating mods section of this guide. While Minecraft's block limitations are part of the fun for many, LittleTiles allows those who want more flexibility to build with pixel-sized tiles. With LittleTiles, the only limit is your imagination. The small blocks in this mod can even be used to create moving parts, flashing lights, and more.

blade
Chisel gives you access to a chisel that you can use to change the texture of any block. Featuring a variety of industrial-style textures, Chisel allows players to build the most intricate and complex mechanical structures.

frame blocks
Squares are great, but sometimes you want a curve, right? FramedBlocks adds a ridiculous amount of new shapes to the Minecraft inventory for you to work on your unique builds. Even better, they also have customizable textures. Just right-click on a slope, tile or step with another Minecraft block and it will get the same texture. Do you want a wool vase? Do you have it?

decoration crafts
If you want a little more variety when decorating your Minecraft house, Decocraft is for you. It adds nearly 3,000 new customizable items, including handcrafted chairs, tables, bowls, bottles, lamps, stuffed animals, beer kegs, and even a kitchen sink. You can join the official Discord mode to keep up with all of these things.

Bibliographic
Bibliocraft also offers blocks that are aesthetically pleasing but have their own functionality. Originally based around customizable bookshelves, Bibliocraft also features display cases and shelves to display your armor and trophies, while a printing press allows you to copy in-game books. It even adds a monocle for the avid Minecrafters among you.

Pam's HarvestCraft 2
Pam's Harvestcraft 2 makes some major changes to your Minecraft diet, not so much the build mode as introducing new menu items. The successor to the original Pam's Harvestcraft - still available in Minecraft versions up to 1.12 - PH2 is split into four different modes: Basic Food Mode, Plants, Trees and Advanced Food Mode. The result is a Minecraft diet that's equal parts rich and balanced. If you want to make it a necessity and not just a fun addition to vanilla Minecraft, use it with Hunger Repair and Spice of Life, which will punish your unhealthy eating habits.
With all these mods to choose from, I hope you're ready to get lost in Minecraft again. If you need a handy tool to manage your mods, our guide to installing and using Minecraft Forge will help you organize your modding needs. If that's still not enough of a vanilla game, check out our list of the best crafting games for PC.
