Apple Developing Two FlipStyle Foldable IPhone Prototypes: 2024 Reports
Apple is currently working on two foldable iPhone prototypes, according to sources familiar with the matter. This prototype is not intended to be a larger foldable phone like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 or OnePlus Open, but rather a flip device similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Oppo Find N3 Flip models.
It's important to note that Apple's discovery of a design doesn't mean they intend to release it. Instead, the company is experimenting with this form factor. This foldable iPhone model is not part of Apple's production plans for 2022 or 2025. If the project goes forward, a possible launch would be in the fall of 2026. However, the further development of this project will depend on the standards of Apple. It can be canceled at any time.
The tech giant has been interested in the technology since 2018, initially aiming to create a thin, foldable device with a profile similar to current iPhone models when closed. However, issues with battery and display technology have hindered progress. It's worth noting that Apple has considered a design where the screen will be on the outside when the device is folded, similar to the flip version of the Huawei Mate.
Concerns have been raised about the sustainability of this approach, which makes the design process more complex. In 2020, the company decided to stop developing the iPhone and focus on the foldable iPad, which is expected to be released in 2026. Now, it appears that the company is actively pursuing both projects.
Currently, Apple engineers are focused on solving technical hurdles, such as eliminating screen creases and designing a hinge mechanism that allows the screen to lie completely flat. The goal of this effort is to ensure a smooth experience, especially with accessories like the Apple Pencil. The display supplier for the foldable iPhone has not been determined, although LG and Samsung Display are involved in the foldable iPad project.
