Tecno Announces Variable Apperture, Liquid Lens Periscope Coming To Phantom X Series

This week, Tecno held its Future Lens event in Shanghai and showcased three innovative technologies that we will see in future Phantom X camera phones.

The first is a unique adjustable diaphragm that Tecno calls an adjustable W-diaphragm. It is inspired by the eye of a cuttlefish and is designed to eliminate glare in unfavorable lighting conditions, such as strong backlighting.

It's a unique approach and we can't wait to see what sensor and lens combination Tecno puts in front of the W-shutter. Here's a demonstration of the shutter in action.

Tecno also introduced the industry's first liquid macro lens. We've seen liquid lens technology before, but never in a periscope module. Periscopes are large and achieving macro focus on a traditional two-piece body is a challenge.

Tecno focus uses tension to adjust the curvature of the lens, dynamically adjusting length to width and achieving macro focusing at a distance of 5cm. Tecno says the liquid lens design allows for a large sensor.

Most phones use ultra-wide-angle cameras for macro photography. But his broader view significantly distorts the images. In this case, using a longer focal length, such as with a periscope zoom, is the way to true macro photography.

Tecno has also revised its Universal Tone technology. It uses three artificial intelligence engines to enhance skin tones in photos. The multi-caliber skin tone restoration engine corrects skin tones using a spectral color matrix based on chromatic skin tone analysis.

The local adjustment engine detects nearby people and plays with the tone maps to make the image brighter. Finally, the Computational Portrait Engine gives everything a nice aesthetic.

Tecno hasn't specified which future products will pioneer the liquid lens and W-shaped aperture, but we'll be investing in the Phantom next year.
