Music Review: Poppy Grows Up And Goes Dark Popy With Genreblending Album 'Zig'
Neither dark pop, nor techno, nor genre, Poppy's fifth studio album, Zig, is a mixture of styles and an example of how far she has come since her debut five years ago.
"Zig," for those who remember Poppy's 2017 debut, "Poppy.Computer," is a departure from the old Poppy sound that followed the initial introduction of the cute but weird pseudo-AI character Poppy through surreal visual art. . YouTube video from 2015. The blonde android is nowhere to be seen in Sieg, but that's not surprising: she's been gone for a long time.
Poppy's style and sound began to change with the release of her second album Am I a Girl? since 2018. started getting into heavy metal, and then in 2020, "I Disagree" got even darker. He toned down the melody of the more alternative song "Flux" and is now back with "Zig", an improved combination. his previous posts.
Born Moriah Rose Pereira, the 28-year-old singer-songwriter's sweet voice, backed by synths and electric beats, can be heard on "Zig" in a variety of forms, from heavy metal screams to soulful serenades. He may be finding his sound, but "Zig" has a confidence that means he knows exactly what he's doing.
The album's highlights can be found in "Knockoff", an upbeat pop song, and "Motorbike", an extended description of a free spirit on a motorcycle. (“Girl on a motorcycle/No one can limit/Epitome of freedom/I’m coming for her,” he sings).
The failures come in songs with mediocre, repetitive lyrics, such as "1s + 0s" and, unfortunately, "Zig", whose chorus goes:
“When you zigzag/when you zigzag/I zigzag.”
Shark?
This is especially surprising when the lyrics of other songs are nothing more than pure poetry. Take, for example, these lines from the beautiful song “Linger”: “In the whites of your eyes / I see my next life / I smell the lilies in the night / Tell me why you will remember me.”
Overall, "Zig" is an interesting and experimental mix that shows how Poppy has grown over the years. Combining a variety of genres, this album has a song for everyone and is well worth a listen.
