Vivo X90 Handson Review

Vivo X90 Handson Review

The Vivo X90, which launched in China last November, began its international launch this year with the vivo X90 Pro. We tested the X90 Pro and found it to be an exemplary flagship smartphone with impressive image quality, but now we have a chance to kill some time with the cheaper vivo X90. We've been using the vivo X90 for a month now and here's what we learned about it.

package

The Vivo X90 comes in a blue retail box similar to that of the X90 Pro with the same contents. You get a protective case, SIM eject tool, USB-C cable, 120W charger and the usual documents. It does not come with wired USB-C headphones or a 3.5mm headphone adapter.

design

The Vivo X90 features a 6.78-inch FullHD+ Curved AMOLED display protected by SCHOTT Xensation α glass. The panel has a screen refresh rate of 120Hz and a peak brightness of 1300 nits. There is also a hole in the center for a 32MP selfie camera.

There is also a fingerprint scanner below the screen for biometric authentication. We found it to be fast and accurate in our operations and we really liked it, but we didn't like the location. The UD fingerprint scanner is located near the bottom bezel, making it difficult to access. This also happened with the Vivo X90 Pro. Placing the fingerprint reader a little higher, like on the Vivo X80 Pro, is more comfortable and allows for better unlocking.

If you have the vivo there is an LED flash on the right, along with some camera specs and ZEISS branding. Below that is a strip that says "Xtreme Imagination," like the X90 Pro. However, it's made of plastic rather than metal and doesn't feel premium.

It should be noted that Vivo has used a "stronger and more durable glass lens with excellent light transmission" for its camera module, which is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and the camera has a ZEISS T* coating.

The Vivo X90 will be offered in Asteroid Black, Breeze Blue, and Red colors, with availability varying by market. We have a blue model that looks great. The curved back has a subtle gloss pattern and a matte finish that's smudge-resistant yet makes the phone as sleek as the Vivo X80 Pro. Nevertheless, this version is comfortable to hold, but does not wobble on flat surfaces due to the front camera, which is not very useful in combination with a protective cover.

The X90 doesn't have flat bezels like some of Vivo's lower-end smartphones, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference.

The frame itself is made of aluminum alloy and has antenna lines on all four sides. The phone's right bezel houses a responsive volume rocker and power button, while the bottom houses a USB-C port, SIM card slot, main microphone, and speaker grille.

There is an additional microphone on top that is connected to the IR blaster. You get a "Pro Photography" tag at the top, just like the Pro version, and an additional speaker above the selfie camera near the bezel for immersive sound.

We like the overall design of the vivo X90. It might not be as luxurious as the X90 Pro, but it definitely doesn't feel cheap.

shows

The vivo X90's 6.78-inch curved AMOLED display has a peak brightness of 1300 nits, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and a pixel density of 452 ppi. It supports 1.07 billion colors and is equipped with HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. Enable L1 flow, L1 stratification. 0p video in supported applications.

The Vivo X90 has good on-screen haptic feedback thanks to the X-axis linear motor. Combined with the phone's slim profile, typing is a pleasure. The panel is also quite bright and we had no problems reading text in direct sunlight and at maximum brightness.

Like the Vivo X90 Pro, the Vivo X90 is also equipped with the Vivo V2 chip which improves the photo and viewing experience on the phone. The latter offers 120Hz game frame interpolation, allowing you to play games at higher frame rates with lower power consumption. However, only a limited number of games currently support game frame interpolation.

The Vivo also gives you an "Apps run at higher refresh rate" setting when you choose the 120Hz option, which lets you choose which apps/games can run at 120Hz. We enabled it for all apps and games installed on our devices.

In Smart Switch mode, the refresh rate of most menus and system apps increases from 60Hz to 120Hz when interacting with the screen, with the exception of a few apps, including YouTube, Google Chrome, Google Photos, GSMArena, and Quora, which remain at 60Hz. On Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the refresh rate is 120Hz when you interact with the screen, dropping to 60Hz when viewing pictures or playing videos.

vivo X90 live review

In 60Hz mode, the refresh rate is expected to stay at 60Hz for everything, whether you're interacting with the screen or just looking at it. 120Hz mode is essentially a smart switch mode, but instead of being limited to 60Hz, all apps run at 120Hz when interacting with the screen.

We tried Call of Duty Mobile, Dead Trigger 2, Real Racing 3 and Sky Force Reload on the Vivo X90. In Smart Switch mode, only Dead Trigger 2 achieves 120 fps when interacting with the screen and stays at 60 fps when watching, while Dead Trigger 2 and Sky Force Reloaded in 120 Hz mode achieve 120 fps when interacting with the screen.

If you want a smoother experience, 120Hz mode is best if you want to enable it separately for apps/games in high refresh rate app settings.

Although the press materials state a refresh rate of 90Hz, we see that this is not enabled. At the vivo

software and performance

The Vivo X90 is powered by the Dimension 9200 SoC, the same chip as the more expensive vivo X90 Pro. It has 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Our Nash has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Regardless of the storage configuration chosen, the smartphone runs Android 13-based Funtouch OS 13, as Origin OS is still limited to Chinese devices.

Our devices are now up to date with the May 1st, 2023 security patch. Vivo promises three generations of Android updates and three years of "regular security updates". Only time will tell how well Vivo manages to release security patches regularly.

Third-party apps come preinstalled on the Vivo X90, but luckily most of these can be uninstalled if you wish. It should also be noted that the vivo X90 comes preinstalled with popular apps and popular games that the X90 Pro does not have. It's unclear if this is a cost-cutting measure or if the X90 Premium is cheaper than the X90 Pro.

The software you get for the Vivo X90 is the same as the X90 Pro. We therefore recommend that you read our vivo X90 Pro review if you want to know more about Funtouch OS 13.

Some earlier vivo/iQOO flagships released in India weren't as fast as other phones with the same chipset, which fortunately wasn't the case with the X90 and X90 Pro. Vivo has finally done enough to improve the user experience and it's about time. However, switching between apps using the navigation keys is still a hassle as there are no improvements in this regard. Gesture-based navigation is by far the best these days, but it can still annoy old-school folks.

There are still a few bugs to fix. The always-on screen turns off automatically when the phone battery runs out. This is also true of the X90 Pro India, but not the previous Vivo (and iQOO) flagships we've used in India.

In addition, the vivo X90 is said to improve its ability to connect to 5G networks as it switches to 4G/4G+ in certain placements and at certain points in the room. It switches from 5G to 4G while charging, which isn't ideal. Several other 5G smartphones we've used in the same room and on the same network didn't experience this issue. Thankfully, the network switching issue was fixed in the May 2023 Android security update, but Vivo has yet to fix the always-on display issue.

While the vivo X90's software isn't without its flaws, the overall performance of this Dimensity 9200-equipped smartphone is snappy and fluid. There were no stutters in everyday use and the phone also mastered long gaming sessions without any problems. However, the vivo will also have instances where the X90 got very hot when not in use and lying on a table. Vivo needs to find the right optimization to fix this problem.

camera

Like the X90 Pro, the Vivo X90 has four cameras - one on the front and three on the back. The X90's front camera uses the same 32-megapixel sensor as the Pro model, but the rear triple camera configuration is different. It has a 50 MP primary lens, a 12 MP ultra wide-angle lens (108° field of view) and a 12 MP telephoto lens. The fourth circle contains the laser focus sensor.

The 32MP selfie camera has an aperture of f/2.45 and can record videos up to 1080p at 60fps. It supports five portrait photography styles from ZEISS: Biotaro, Sonar, Planar, Distagon and Cinematic. Vivo introduced a new ZEISS portrait style called Cine-Flare with the X90 series, but it's not available for the X90 and X90 Pro's front camera.

vivo X90 live review

The 50-megapixel main camera on the back has an f/1.75 aperture and OIS. It uses a Sony IMX866vcs sensor capable of recording video at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. It can record HDR10+ video in 1080p at 30fps, and you also have the option to record video with ZEISS cinema filters.

The two 12-megapixel cameras use the Sony IMX663 sensor, but one behind a 2x optical zoom telephoto lens and the other behind an ultra-wide-angle lens. Another thing to note is that the 12-megapixel telephoto lens, advertised as a "professional portrait camera," has an f/1.98 aperture, while the 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera has an f/2.0 aperture. The latter can also do macro photography in Super Macro mode.

vivo X90 live review

All three cameras on the Vivo X90 take pictures quickly in the standard photo mode, and we didn't notice any shutter lag. The main camera captures flowers and plants in windy weather without blurring. We also like the sports mode, which helps users capture blur-free shots in fast-moving situations. We took several shots of fast moving vehicles from inside a speeding car and the results were better than expected.

Compared to the X90 Pro and given its cheaper price, the X90 takes great photos day and night. But despite the ZEISS T* coating on all the rear cameras, photos taken with the main camera and the ultra-wide camera show flare at night and in low light, which is also the case with the more expensive X90 Pro.

Images captured in Portrait mode have excellent subject separation, but the algorithm often struggles with glasses and out-of-focus areas, regardless of the distance between the camera and the subject. In some scenes in photos taken with the ultra-wide-angle camera, we also saw that some distant objects disappeared.

The Vivo X90 also has a Supermoon mode that lets you take photos at 1x, 2x and 10x zoom. The photos of the moon we took at 1x and 2x look fake and artificial compared to 10x, so we prefer it. However, when shooting at 10x Supermoon, it is best to use a tripod.

Below are some images we captured with the vivo X90.

battery

The Vivo X90 is equipped with a 4810mAh dual-cell battery, which is 60mAh less than the X90 Pro's battery. We were unable to run our standard battery test on the vivo X90. However, the vivo Usage includes web browsing, YouTube video streaming, social networking applications, and resource-intensive gaming for at least an hour.

vivo X90 live review

When the battery runs out, you can supplement it with the included 120W power adapter, which claims to charge from 1% to 50% in 8 minutes. In our tests, the smartphone charged from 1% to 23% in 5 minutes, 42% in 10 minutes, 50% in 12 minutes, 59% in 15 minutes, 99% in 30 minutes and 100% in 32 minutes. We ran this charging test during Indian summer with the screen always on and 5G cellular data enabled. Your mileage will likely vary based on usage and ambient temperature.

Diploma

The Vivo X90 is not a premium flagship like the Vivo

In India, the vivo There is also a model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, priced at INR 59,999 ($730/€670).

Although the vivo X90 is not a real flagship, it offers many advantages. It has a nice sleek IP54 design and the Breez Blue is a real beauty. The overall performance is impressive, even in games the AMOLED display is bright and vivid.
