Movement Festival 2023: What To Know As The Techno Music World Converges On Detroit
Techno music is still buzzing in Detroit, and it's going to be loud in town this weekend.
Memorial Day showcases one of Detroit's most unique cultural traditions, when the electronic music festival scene takes over Hart Plaza and opens up after-party gatherings for the city's fans.
The event, which runs from Saturday to Monday, is packed with the biggest program to date, with more than 120 artists on six stages. Weekend and single day tickets are available.
This is the 22nd edition of the Detroit Memorial Day Techno Festival, which took over the festival in 2006, and the 16th Detroit event for Patchhau.
Here is an overview.
The first female leader
Belgian DJ-producer Charlotte de Wit started on the scene in 2018 and emerged in the underground scene as she began to break out internationally. This year, she will be the first to grace the main stage on Sunday night, often the festival's peak day for audiences, making her the first woman to headline the Detroit techno festival since its inception in 2000.
DeWitt arrives in Detroit on the heels of his new EP "Overdrive" and single "High Street." He plays Sunday at 10:30 at Hart Plaza.
Also supported by veteran British duo Basement Jaxx of 1999 Red Alert fame, who played the main stage on Saturday, the festival closes on Monday with Underworld, who will finally play The Movement when the band's 2020 bookings are complete: Covid-19 shutdown .
After leaving last year's festival, Skrillex welcomed February's pair of albums, "Finding Fire" and "Don't Get Too Close," on Monday at 8 p.m.
Saturday's highlights also include Three 6 Mafia and Z's Dead, while Caribou, Green Velvet and Broken Records make their debut on the show with Kevin Sanderson on Sunday. On Monday, Dom Dolla performs with John Summit, Cascade Redux and more.
Detroit flexed its muscles
The movement has gained popularity among local Detroit DJs, who remain at the spiritual heart of the event, combining tastemaker-approved talent.
Techno godfather Juan Atkins takes center stage Sunday under the moniker Cyboron, reviving the early 1980s work that helped transform Detroit's electronic music scene. Tech house pioneer Kevin Sanderson and his son Dantiz will join forces on the Stargate Stage that night.
Carl Craig and John Dixon will close out Saturday's show with "Detroit Love," bringing hometown stars Muddyman, Octave One, DJ Holographic and more to the Stargate Stage.
Eddie Fowles and Robert Hood will take the main stage on Sunday, while other Detroit headliners for the weekend include Aux 88, Seth Troxler, Kash Doll, Stacey (Hotwaxx) Hale, Suburban Knight and Sheefy McFly.
Kudos to the king of techno!
Celebrate the Artists, an exhibition honoring key figures in Detroit's techno renaissance, returns to the basement of Hart Plaza for a second year, this time with a revamped showcase featuring the likes of Delano Smith, Mike Huckabee, Delano Smith and Mike Huckabee. . Mike Banks, Kelli Hand and many more.
Movement 2023 artists Amy Fisher Price and Kelly Golden will create a multimedia installation called "Detroit Techno City" near the Pyramid Stage, and equipment company Sweetwater will host a music technology studio near the Detroit Stage.
"Give me the drum machines," says God on the big screen.
Having premiered in Detroit last August, co-organized by Big Sean and the Fripp Film Festival, this live techno music documentary will have its second screening Friday at the Michigan Science Center at 7 p.m. After the screening there will be a meeting with the filmmakers.
Tickets for Friday's Tribeca Documentary screening are $20 and can be purchased through Eventbrite.
Directed by Christian Hill, God Said Give 'Em Drum Machines chronicles the tragedy and drama of Detroit's '80s techno scene with rare recordings and performances from many of the genre's pioneers.
The film crew will host a documentary workshop at the Detroit Museum of History on Saturday at 1 p.m.
