Vivo X90 Pro Review: Creature Of The Night

The Vivo X90 Pro is an interesting alternative to the Galaxy, Pixel and iPhone models of this world with a sunset-lit camera. However, poor software options and lack of polish prevented it from breaking into the Android Elite.

Vivo has climbed onto the camera phone map in recent years, bringing with it new micro-gimbal stabilization technology and a partnership with photography brand Carl Zeiss. The culmination of its efforts to date, the Vivo X80 Pro 2022 features an impressive camera system with excellent low-light capabilities, along with all the premium extras you'd expect from a high-end flagship phone. Is the Vivo X90 Pro another step in the company's ambitions? It's time to find out in Android Authority 's Vivo X90 Pro review.

About this Vivo X90 Pro review: I tested the Vivo X90 Pro (12GB/256GB) for 10 days. It runs on Android 13 (build number PD2242F_EX_A_13.1.11.3.W20) with the January 2023 security patch. The device for this test was provided by Vivo.

The Vivo X90 Pro is one of three phones in the high-end X90 series, which also includes the standard X90 and the high-end X90 Pro Plus. Unfortunately, the X90 Pro Plus, which rivals the best Android phones in terms of specs, has limited availability in China, leaving the X90 Pro as the top model in global markets at the time of writing.

Vivo's Pro model is still a flagship device when it comes to specs and features, including the new MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor with ray tracing support, a 1-inch 50MP primary camera, IP68 rating and fast wireless charging. The X90 Pro Plus comes with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a telephoto zoom camera, a high-quality ultra-wide camera, and the same amazing in-display fingerprint reader we saw on the X80 Pro.

This leaves the Vivo X90 Pro in a difficult position to be the default successor to the X80 and X70 Pro, while the X90 Pro Plus looks like a successor to the X80 Pro.

Vivo X90 Pro will be available in Hong Kong, Europe, India, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. It comes in a single color called Legendary Black (pictured). There's no word yet on European pricing or a release date, but the device will cost 4,999 Malaysian ringgit (~$1,174) in Malaysia. Its predecessor, the Vivo X80 Pro, retails for £1,199 in the UK and €1,299 in the rest of Europe.

Which one is better?

After unboxing the Vivo X90 Pro, I was greeted by a phone that looks similar to other Vivo X series phones from the front. Flipping the device over reveals a new vegan synthetic leather with a smooth grain texture that gives it a premium look and feel. I also like the thin metal strip that runs under the camera ring. It blends well into the frame and separates the top third of the phone from the bottom two thirds.

The camera body itself is large, like half of an Oreo cookie - or what Vivo calls "Big Eyes". It's not the biggest camera island we've seen, but it's still a lot bigger than the X80 Pro's module or even the Google Pixel 7 Pro's thick camera bar. Laying it flat on a surface isn't too annoying, but since the phone naturally rests there, I'm concerned that the bottom of the case will wear out over time. However, the leather back and slightly curved edges give the phone a premium kit feel. There's nothing wrong with having Scott Genesis Up glass on the screen and Corning Gorilla Glass on the camera for protection, as well as IP68-rated water resistance.

The Vivo X90 Pro's OLED display is an upgrade over the regular FHD+ display.

The Vivo X90 Pro's display is a 6.78-inch curved OLED display with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The good news is that you get a great viewing experience here. The 2800 x 1280 display may not be a QHD+ panel, but on paper it's an improvement over regular FHD+ displays, and I have no complaints about sharpness. The screen operates at a maximum brightness of 1300 nits and I had no problems using the device outdoors. Vivo offers a variety of display color profiles, including the Zeiss Natural Color option for more realistic colors.

Vivo introduced the Dimensity 9200 processor in the X90 Pro instead of the ubiquitous Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that powers most 2023 flagships, including Vivo's own X90 Pro Plus. This is our first best chip for 2023 from MediaTek and based on its specs, it should deliver impressive performance. So what do standardized tests tell us?

In particular, the Geekbench results show that the Dimensity 9200 is quite powerful, but lags behind the best Snapdragon silicon in terms of multi-core CPU scores. However, the X90 Pro performs better in GPU-related benchmarks, beating the OnePlus 11 at its peak in the Wild Life stress test, putting it in the same league as the flagship Snapdragon processor, which is no easy task. It's also close to the Galaxy S23 Ultra's top score, but doesn't quite match it for consistent performance – more on that later.

Otherwise, I had nothing to complain about in the day-to-day performance of the Vivo X90 Pro during my tests; Scrolling, multitasking and launching apps are possible without any issues. The game is a tough test, but Genshin Impact runs smoothly on medium settings and 60 fps. The GameCube and PS2 emulations are also excellent, although I noticed some stuttering in more demanding games like Shadow of the Colossus and F-Zero GX. This has more to do with the health of Arm's Mali graphics driver than a lack of raw horsepower.

There's no point in having a lot of raw power if the phone isn't flat. While the X90 Pro's 4,870mAh battery isn't spectacular, it generally does a good job. Normal use with YouTube videos, some gaming and web browsing resulted in over seven hours of active screen time and over a day and a half of use (see first image below). About an hour of GPS navigation, about an hour of camera use, and heavy Reddit browsing results in about five hours of active screen time and a full day of use.

Vivo X90 Pro comes with 120W wired and 50W wireless charging. The fast charge switch is surprisingly disabled, but I recorded a zero to 100% time of 29 minutes without it. The last three minutes were saved by activating the fast charging button. In any case, you should expect a charging time of half an hour or less, which is in line with the OnePlus 11 and other phones with super fast charging. It should be noted that the wired and wireless charging solutions are proprietary. The included 120W USB-C to USB-C charger also offers 65W PPS charging, so you can easily charge other devices. If you want maximum wireless speeds, the only downside is getting Vivo's first-party wireless charger, though it does support Qi wireless charging as a fallback option.

Two more positives are eSIM support and some high-quality stereo speakers. The previous feature was delayed for a long time as previous Vivo flagships did not have this connectivity option. Meanwhile, the X90 Pro blows the Pixel 7 Pro out of the water when it comes to speaker volume. The speaker is slightly louder than the headphone speaker, but the sound is well balanced.

What is not good?

Just look at the app drawer to see that Vivo still hasn't fixed the bloatware problem in Funtouch OS. We counted 11 pre-installed apps that don't include the Hot Apps/Hot Games icon and Vivo's own apps (like Browser and Vivo App Store). In a slightly interesting move, Vivo asks if you want to install other apps like Snapchat, PicsArt, Pinterest, TurboVPN and Facebook Lite during the installation process. Vivo Skin definitely has potential thanks to its aesthetic and decent feature list. Vivo really needs to address the bloatware issue if FunTouch OS has any chance of bringing out the best Android skins.

It also doesn't help to keep Vivo in the update race. Vivo X90 Pro is supported for three major OS updates and security patches for three years. Previous update policies were good, but three years of security updates is pretty bad when Google and Samsung both offer five years. Even the OnePlus Stablemate BBK offers four years of security patches for older flagships and five years of security patches until 2023.

Funtouch OS is a solid Android skin, which in turn is marred by a ton of bloatware

While performance is good overall and in games, the Vivo X90 Pro heats up to unacceptable levels under standard stress tests. In this case, the device heats up uncomfortably, especially at the edges. Of course, this stress test pushed the phone beyond what 3D gaming requires, but it still left us a little worried about how the phone would handle more complex tasks later on.

Apart from the stable performance, the 3DMark Wild Life stress test showed that the phone reached only about 60% of its original performance. This is close to the OnePlus 11's score, but far behind the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is only ~37% lower, despite the Galaxy S23 Ultra achieving an overall durability rating of ~60% in our test. We didn't see any real drop in gaming performance during longer gaming sessions, but with the heat we experienced, the X90 Pro can totally win marathon mobile gaming sessions.

It's a little disappointing that the X90 Pro's screen doesn't even support refresh rates below 60Hz. The phone stays at 120Hz, 60Hz or dynamically switches between the two with the Smart Switch option. In comparison, the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus drop to 48Hz, while many premium flagships have LTPO displays that drop to 10Hz or 1Hz. It's not a big deal, but a lower refresh rate can increase battery life in some cases.

Speaking of negatives, the in-display fingerprint sensor here is a definite step up from the excellent Sonic Max 3D scanner of the Vivo X80 Pro. It's still a snappy, if sometimes imprecise, experience, but it's a little disappointing to see the new scanner remain exclusive to the top-end model.

Finally, while I really like the design of the Vivo X90 Pro, I could totally do without the "Extreme Imagination" branding on the metal strip on the back, as well as the "Professional Photography" branding on the top of the earpiece. . Why ruin a good thing, Vivo?

The Vivo X90 Pro's triple rear camera system is dominated by a 1-inch, 50MP IMX989 primary camera. It's the biggest camera sensor you'll find on a mainstream smartphone today, and it's on par with the Xiaomi 13 Pro. What does this mean for actual image quality?

Daytime photos offer plenty of natural bokeh due to the large sensor size, but I think that's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you get a nice separation between foreground and background. On the other hand, in some cases you have to take a step back or risk blurring the blurred subject or part of the subject.

In fact, the camera seems to have a small focus range even when pulled back, resulting in color bleed and a general lack of focus (see the edges of the flowers in the 1x photo, as well as the noodle bowl photo). Therefore, you may need to hold the phone further to take a good picture.

Otherwise, daytime photos taken via the main camera generally offer a healthy level of detail, minimal noise and relatively bright colors. Thankfully, if you want more realistic colors, the Zeiss Natural color profile is also back. However, phones sometimes apply a bit of sharpness.
