New Exeter House And Techno Community Meetups A Hit In The City
Café Exeter has become a regular haunt for the emerging house and techno DJ crew.
To date, The Sunset Society Cafe has hosted four successful community gatherings, giving budding DJs the opportunity to spin their music on a professional deck in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Tim Lawton, founder of the house and techno Facebook group, has been blown away by the response from country music fans since the community started last September.
For the first time this year, Tim said at last Saturday's gathering: "There's a real thirst for music artists in a community like this."
"It appeals to a diverse age group from 18 to 60, crowning the original '90s explorers and newcomers alike."
After joining the Facebook group, Sunset Society Cafe manager Charlie West quickly saw an opportunity for the fashion cause.
Charlie said: “I had the idea of doing an open house a few years ago so I joined the Tim's House and Techno group on Facebook and saw the conversation there and thought this cafe would be a good place for people to play ."
He also said last weekend's gathering had the highest attendance, with 30 DJs contacting him for DJ slots.
Ali, a final year student at the University of Exeter and a veteran DJ, said: "It's a great test, no pressure - it's almost a simulated experience."
For 56-year-old Neil Chandlerv, the band fulfilled his dream of playing techno music commercially, not just in coffee shops, but at Gravitate Lawton techno parties.
Said Neil: "Exeter didn't really have a house and techno scene so it was really fun to be part of creating a kind of atmosphere that Exeter didn't have before."
In addition to creating opportunities for musicians, Tim says he likes the community to cater to people who have recently moved to the area or are just looking to meet new people and "want to socialize instead of hang out. Just focus on the music." .
