Samsung's New App Lets Doctors Conduct An Exam Through Your TV Screen
Samsung has expanded its smart TV platform to include streaming apps and gaming platforms, but at this year's CES, it wanted to bring healthcare to the big screen. New telemedicine software from Samsung allows patients to receive treatment on TV at home.
After people choose from a list of symptoms and indicate how sick they are, the app suggests the "right doctors". Samsung will then connect doctors and patients at home. The company says its service will "usually" connect doctors "within 60 seconds."
Once connected, doctors will be able to "video-conferencing a check-up via app" using the TV's built-in camera. The app can also integrate with devices other than the TV, including Samsung's own Galaxy Watch. Once the trial is complete, Samsung says users will not only be able to rate their experience, but also schedule follow-up appointments and fill prescriptions remotely, including through an onscreen app. They can deliver directly to your door. New to its latest lineup of Neo QLED TVs, OLED TVs and smart displays, Samsung has unveiled an optional attachable camera that allows TV owners to "monitor their health without invasive physical diagnoses." The camera uses a "computer vision technology" called remote photogrammetry (rPPG), which "evaluates vital signs by detecting changes in facial skin color as a result of a heartbeat."
With this technology, the company says the camera will be able to measure "five basic vital signs: heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and stress index" while sitting on the couch.
While both concepts are impressive in theory, Samsung hasn't revealed many details beyond these bold claims, including how to find a doctor or whether it will sign up with any insurance providers. As with the other flashy announcements at CES, no pricing or availability was announced for the cameras or telemedicine apps. We hope to have more details soon.
