Oppo's New Folding Phone Is The Lightest One I've Ever Carried
When I think of foldable phones, I think of a big, heavy device. Oppo's latest foldable phone, the Find N2, is starting to change opinions. The Chinese company's new phone, announced on Wednesday, is the lightest foldable device you'll find, even when compared to its biggest competitor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 . It's also the shortest fold I've ever used.
Foldable phones seem to be inherently heavy, which is one of their main drawbacks, but Oppo has made impressive progress with the Find N2. It's 42 (42!) grams lighter than its predecessor, the Find N. Oppo thanks to its innovative "Flexion" hinge to create a lightweight phone. Oppo claims that it has reduced the number of components needed to build the hinge and has included materials such as carbon fiber and aerospace-grade "high-strength alloy".
In addition to its comfortable size, the Find N2 features all the bells and whistles of the 2022 foldable flagship. It has the powerful Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, responsive dual displays, fast charging and powerful cameras. However, there is no official IP rating for water and dust resistance, so you probably won't be able to buy this phone even if you were interested. Find N2 is only slated to launch in China. However, Oppo also unveiled a new flip phone, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 4, and an international release is expected in the coming months. There were no pricing available for the Find N2 at the time of this writing.
Find N2 short
The Find N2's design is similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is a book-style foldable phone. However, one major difference is that the Find N2 feels more compact. The Find N2 is about 1 inch shorter than the Z Fold 4. Think about the height of the iPhone 13 Mini , but it's protected by twice the thickness. It also has a different aspect ratio of 17.7:9. This means that when you open the Find N2, it switches to a square screen compared to the rectangular screen seen on the Z Fold 4.
Find N2 is the lightest foldable phone on the market. At 233 grams, the Find N2 is 30 grams lighter than the Z Fold 4. It's also a few grams lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max . This lightweight design makes it easy to manage the weight inherent in a foldable phone.
All these features make it a more portable foldable phone. I feel more comfortable carrying it in my pocket without worrying about it falling or falling out. This square screen also helps the Find N2 stand out from competing devices from Samsung and Huawei, though these phones have many similarities.
Find N2 has an almost wrinkle-free screen
Oppo admits that the Find N2's main screen has a notch, but it's barely visible. In my short time with the Find N2, I've hardly seen or felt any wrinkles. I actually had to maneuver the screen at a right angle (in a bright room) to see it. While a completely wrinkle-free phone is perfect, the Find N2 didn't bother me at all. In terms of durability, Oppo claims Find N2 has been tested up to 400,000 times.
The Find N's internal display is 7.1 inches and offers a 120Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 7.6-inch internal display. The Find N2 also has a 5.5-inch external AMOLED display, which might fall short if you're used to big phones.
Find N2 has a triple lens rear camera
Find N2 features a stylish Hasselblad branded camera module. There are three cameras on the back: a 50MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 32MP telephoto camera. Overall, the Find N2 took sharp photos, even in low-light environments. It was also great to have a telephoto lens that could have 2x optical zoom, which is 1x less than the Z-fold, and it supports 10-bit RAW and full manual control with Hasselblad interface elements.
Like its foldable rival from Samsung, the Find N2 has a fun feature that lets you use the foldable display as a selfie viewfinder for the rear camera. This is a big problem because the front cameras tend to be of better quality than the phone's main rear camera.
Oppo's Find N2 also has a feature called FlexForm Mode, which moves the app you're in to the top of the screen while showing the controls at the bottom when the phone is half open. This allows you to place the camera on a surface - for example a table - and shoot a subject from an overhead angle. In my case, I used it to take pictures of my dog sleeping on the floor and eventually started to take some nice bottom angle photos. I couldn't take this picture with a regular phone without bending it. Samsung's foldable phones also have a similar software option called Flex Mode.
I haven't fully tested the Find N2, but Oppo's second foldable phone has impressed me in the short time I've owned it. The Find N2 features a refreshingly compact design, two foldable screens, reliable cameras, and fast charging. With a shorter design, the Find N2 proves it's possible to design a tablet-sized screen phone while still being portable. The boxy shape also sets the Find N2 apart from its main Android competitor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It's unfortunate that the Find N2 is only available in China, at least for now.
