Tucson's Dusk Music Festival Returns For Round Six

Tucson's Dusk Music Festival Returns For Round Six

Alison Wonderland, GRIZ and Young the Giants will come to Jácome Plaza on November 11th and 12th for the sixth annual Tucson Evening Music Festival along with 19 other artists across three stages.

This year's lineup of artists spans multiple genres including alternative, indie, techno, dance and electronic music, similar to Dusk's previous lineups. Grouplove, Porter Robinson, Jimmy Eat World and Diplo were the top performers last year.

Dusk is currently the largest music festival in Tucson, although it's not as big as other festivals in the state, like Decadence Arizona and Goldrush Music Festival, two similar EDM festivals, or the annual Country Thunder Arizona Festival in Florence, Arizona.

However, what makes this multi-genre music event so appealing from an experiential perspective for big-name artists and consumers alike is its level of authenticity and intimacy.

"We're a small town, a small boutique festival, but I think we're doing a lot of things right and trying to make sure everyone's having fun and there's something for everyone," Dusky said to Paige Rapp. Founder and director of the festival.

Almost all local vendors, restaurants, entertainers and community services participate in the festival. It offers local students and artisans the opportunity to showcase their talents in a grand and desirable manner.

Most of the art installations will be student-curated through the festival's collaboration with the University of Arizona School of Art's 3D and Extended Media program. The evening includes a Battle of the Bands and a DJ competition for local artists. The winner will receive a set on the Vantage West Credit Union Discovery Stage.

Local LatinX pop-rock band Tonight's Sunshine secured a set after winning the 2022 competition at Hotel Congress on October 21, while Mason Leitstein, aka Nomadic, won the DJ competition at Tender Bene on October 22 .

"Giving these guys the opportunity to be on this stage is what I'm most proud of, what we're capable of," Rapp said. "We just love the city, we love the place and we want to give something back."

Dusk's other co-founders are UA grads John Reillys, Steve Stratigulius, and Pete Turner, who grew up in Tucson. Phoenix' native rap has been here since 1992, which is one of the main reasons they created an inspired night. Her passion for her city belongs to the field of artists and patrons.

“All good things always happen in Phoenix. Tucson didn't have anything great to be proud of, so hopefully that's one of the things we can be proud of as a city," Rapp said.

Rap is helpful in the planning and development of the annual festival. He takes care of all phases of design and construction with his company Repp + McLain Design & Construction. He also built last year's giant windmill and said he has another for future festivals

The festival, which started out as a folk festival, is steadily gaining popularity, growing by 15-20% annually. Expected attendance this year is 11,000 to 12,000 compared to 9,000 last year.
