The Techno Parade returns in style to Paris on Saturday 23 September 2023. A traditional floating parade parades through the streets of the capital to the rhythm of electronic music. But do you know the origin of this inexplicable Parisian festive and cultural event? We tell the story of a techno journey.
It all started in 1997, when former Culture Minister Jack Lang attended the Love Parade in Berlin. The main purpose of the demonstration, which began in July 1989, was to protest against the Berlin Wall, which divided the city into two parts. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, the March of Love continued, gathering more and more participants every year. The incident inspired Jack Lang. He was actually behind the Fete de la Musique and wanted to use the Love Parade as inspiration to promote electronic culture and create an event to de-demonize electronic music, which is often the victim of prejudice.
Jack Lang launched his first techno show on September 19, 1998 together with FG Radio and Technoball founder Henry Morrell . The success was immediate, with the participation of 200,000 people in the first edition. This event led to the formulation of an interdepartmental circular highlighting the cultural aspect of techno.
Since then, the electronic event has been held in Paris every September, except for the cancellation of the techno parade after the September 11 attacks in the United States in 2001. Due to the health crisis, the event was also canceled in 2020 and in 2021.
In 2023, this celebratory online event will celebrate its 25th anniversary and will feature renowned artists such as Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclair, David Guetta, Manu Le Malin, Laurent Garnier and Carl Cox.
