Palestinian DJ, Producer And Curator Odai Masri, AKA ODDZ, Has Died
Palestinian DJ, producer and producer ODDZ, whose real name is Odai Masri, has passed away.
Istanbul broadcaster Roots Radio , where Mastri was a resident DJ, announced the news on Friday June 30, sharing a tribute on Instagram, writing: "It's hard to find words to describe this... our friend, resident, brother, one of the most loved ones of the Raíces Medio community left us today... we have been their support and we will always continue in their fight... rest in peace, beautiful sky.
ODDZ, which describes itself as "the first Palestinian electronic record label " and is based between Haifa, Ramallah and Berlin, has been a major figure in Ramallah's dance underground since 2006, running Harara Records.
In 2019, he co-founded an existing festival launched in Ramallah as a showcase for the best talent in the Palestinian underground. According to him, this event: "Armed with the fertility of the Palestinian counterculture, we present several shining names in the voice of Palestine and on the world stage."
In 2015, he was one of three people to run the internet radio station Nard , when Ramsey joined Hazbun to meet with founder Laiz Albandac, who founded the station a year earlier.
ODDZ is also a producer and released the 2018 'Acid Martire' EP with Bonime and the 2021 'Land Of A Loss' EP with Italian producer Solless, including one half of techno duo ANTS.
Masri often used his music to express or reflect the sociopolitical changes in his country.
On June 24, he posted an emotional statement on Instagram about his physical and mental health struggles, writing, “The last three years have been hard, so hard that I have always thought about giving up… but I am blessed. and I am very lucky to have the support of my family, friends and community.” I am eternally grateful to those who have always been with me, have supported me and have never left me. Thank you!!
The statement continued: “For the past three months I have been completely focused on regaining my mental and physical health. I know this would never have happened without the wonderful people around me and I would have stayed where I was or given it my all. Hurry up. above!"
The cause of death is currently unknown.
Earlier this year, Chaos London launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to restore his hearing: “Last November, our dear friend Oda Masri, founder of the electronic music festival in Palestine, was diagnosed. As a serious ear infection could end his music career, we've launched this campaign to raise £3,000 to cover Garment's medical bills, maintenance costs and recovery time after surgery.
