I've been an iPhone user all my life, but since joining the digital trend, the Galaxy S23 has become one of my favorites. The S23 may be the smallest and cheapest of the family, but frankly there's a lot going on here.

Samsung Galaxy S23: Design
Unlike the previous Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S22, the Galaxy S23 has a new design that resembles other modern smartphones like the iPhone 14 Pro. Camera Island is no longer inhabited; Instead, the cameras now float freely in the background. The shocks are not as strong as the iPhone, but are not fully absorbed. However, it's a clean, streamlined design that will appeal to less professionals. It's the same design you'll find on the Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Samsung uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back glass, and the glossy metal frame features Samsung Armor Aluminum. The S23 is IP68 rated, which means it's dust and water resistant. Unless you use a case or screen protector with your phone, the S23 should be pretty durable. But if you don't want to leave anything to chance, there's no harm in looking at Galaxy S23 cases or Galaxy S23 screen protectors.
The Galaxy S23 has a simple design with rounded edges and slightly curved edges, which reminds me of the old iPhone 11 design, but the front screen is flat with bezels and the bezels are quite thin compared to what I'm used to.
The buttons feel great with a tactile click, and as part of Samsung's sustainability efforts, they're also made from recycled materials. The speaker grill is also made from sustainable materials, and recycled Gorilla Glass is found on the Victos 2. The plastic case and screen cover are also eco-friendly.
What I love most about the S23's design is its size and clarity. At just 5.93 ounces, it's much lighter and easier to use than my iPhone 14 Pro, which weighs 7.27 ounces (without my case and MagSafe PopSocket). It's larger than the S23 Ultra at 8.25 ounces. The Galaxy S23's lightness made it comfortable to hold for long periods of time and comfortable to use with one hand, though that may be partly due to the issue. Regardless, I found the S23's back glass to be a bit slippery.
The test unit I got was the cream color, which is an off-white color. If it's Phantom White S22, the cream is definitely a bit beige (you can see if you put them side by side).
Personally, I love the cream color because it's a light, neutral shade that goes with almost anything and makes certain case designs stand out even more. But if you don't like the shade of white, other colors of the Galaxy S23 are Phantom Black, Lavender and Green. If you buy the S23 directly from Samsung's website, you can also choose from unique limestone and graphite options.
Samsung Galaxy S23: Maya
The Galaxy S23 features a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with Full HD+ resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz. Image resolution is set to 2340 x 1080 pixels, which corresponds to 425 pixels per inch (ppi). It's also worth noting that the screens on the S23 and S23 Plus are both completely flat, unlike the screens on the S23 Ultra, which curve around the edges. For me, flat design is more beautiful and practical.
From the moment I turned on the Galaxy S23, I was impressed by the display.
In direct sunlight, peak brightness is limited to 1,750 nits, just like the S23 Plus and S23 Ultra. It may not be as bright as Apple's iPhone 14 Pro series (2,000 nits outdoors), but it's still very useful on a sunny Southern California day. Although it's been a bit darker than I'd like lately, I have no problem using the S23 outdoors in direct sunlight if Mother Nature allows it.
From the moment I turned on the Galaxy S23, I was impressed by the display. Colors are incredibly vibrant – blacks are rich and deep and text is crisp – just as you'd expect from a flagship phone. The 120Hz adaptive refresh rate makes scrolling very smooth, although Android's lack of elasticity compared to iOS still bothers me a bit.
Since Samsung's screens tend to be more vibrant than other devices, I have to admit that photos taken with the device can look overdone. However, when I look at photos taken with the S23 on another device like my iPhone 14 Pro or Pixel 7, things look a bit muted. Samsung's display is a prime example of how things can "pop" on the screen.
Samsung Galaxy S23: Performance and Software

In my week with the phone, I didn't experience any frame rate lag or stuttering with my normal usage. Apps load quickly, switching between multiple apps is a breeze, taking photos and videos is fast, and processing is just as fast.
Gaming performance is excellent – considering the S23 base model, you can only occasionally play a quick game. I played quite a bit of Diablo Immortal while testing the device. My experience was smooth overall, though I did notice some stuttering and framerate drops during heavy action. And since it's just a regular Galaxy S23, I couldn't limit the graphics settings. But if you want to play the occasional match 3 game or similar, the S23 should be able to handle it without breaking a sweat.
While I love the Android experience you get from Google's Pixel phones, I have to admit that the Samsung One's interface is slowly growing on me. It's a bit overwhelming at first, and there are a few things to consider before diving into the phone.
One of my favorite features of the new One UI is that you can change the two lock screen shortcuts to whatever you want. The lock screen customization interface is similar, but much better than iOS 16 – Apple should take a page from Samsung's book here.
Samsung Galaxy S23: Camera
Although the Galaxy S23 is the base model in the range, it has a triple-lens camera system. 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and f/1.8 aperture, 12MP ultrawide camera with f/2.2 aperture and 10MP camera with OIS lens and f/2.4 aperture. The selfie camera is a modest 12-megapixel sensor with dual-pixel autofocus and f/2.2 aperture.
The main focus this year is definitely the S23 Ultra with its 200MP main camera sensor. Although Samsung should have kept the old 108MP camera from the S22 Ultra in the S23 and S23 Plus, the S23 still takes decent pictures when you think about it.
I tried the camera a few times in the park in front of my house to capture the emotions of my 15 month old baby. Thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, the photo is taken quickly after pressing the shutter button and the result is a detailed image with clear and bright colors. I even took the S23 to Disneyland, where it delivered sharp, clear images that were bright and easy on the eyes.
At times I felt that the colors are not 100% what you see in real life, but this is also due to Samsung's screen, which is on the bright side and very saturated. Some of the photos I took with my iPhone 14 Pro and S23 and iPhone Image were more realistic and colorful. But after viewing photos of the S23 on a separate screen like the iPhone 14 Pro through Google Photos, the vibrancy and brightness drop slightly, bringing you closer to what you're seeing.
I like to shoot portrait mode whenever I can, and I think the Galaxy S23 handles edge detection better in portraits than my iPhone 14 Pro. Portrait mode photos I took with the S23 looked good, including selfies, and I quite like the bokeh effect the Galaxy S23 produces, even in standard photos from the main camera. Night mode shots are also great, as the S23 illuminates things well when you need them to (although some fine details are lost in noise after zooming).
The Galaxy S23's telephoto lens has 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom. I was excited to try out the 30x zoom feature, but 10x is basically the limit for decent photos. The 20x and 30x photos I took looked like really bad watercolors Some images, such as the Disney 100 Years of Wonder sign on Disney's California Adventure and a passenger cabin on Pixar's Pal-A-Round, look dated. But a Disney duck zoomed in 30x? Yeah, that doesn't sound good. If you want good zoom images (at least up to 30x), the Galaxy S23 Ultra is definitely the best choice.
The selfie camera looks good even in good lighting. The selfies I took were mostly authentic and the skin tones weren't washed out. I've noticed that the selfie camera sometimes makes my lips look bright and unnaturally orange, but it doesn't always happen, so it might have something to do with the lighting. By default, the skin is smooth and you can choose whether the skin tone is natural or warm, but these can be adjusted to your liking.
It's hard to take bad photos with the Galaxy S23.
I didn't shoot very far in my initial test phase; I don't often find myself in a situation where an ultra wide camera gives the results I'm looking for. But that may change in the coming weeks as I use the phone to compare cameras.
Overall, the Galaxy S23's cameras take great pictures for the average person. Details are vivid and sharp, which is really interesting. Note that colors may be exaggerated due to the display, but should not be exaggerated when viewing on other devices. Zoom capabilities are good up to 10x, but using anything beyond that depends on what you're trying to capture. But it's hard to take bad pictures with regular and selfie cameras.
